Abstract
Nature-inspired search algorithms have proved to be successful in solving real-world optimization problems. Firefly algorithm is a novel meta-heuristic algorithm which simulates the natural behavior of fireflies. In the present study, optimum design of truss structures with both sizing and geometry design variables is carried out using the firefly algorithm. Additionally, to improve the efficiency of the algorithm, modifications in the movement stage of artificial fireflies are proposed. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, optimum designs found are compared to the previously reported designs in the literature. Numerical results indicate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed approach.

Abstract
The present study attempts to apply an efficient yet simple optimization (SOPT) algorithm to optimum design of truss structures under stress and displacement constraints. The computational efficiency of the technique is improved through avoiding unnecessary analyses during the course of optimization using the so-called upper bound strategy (UBS). The efficiency of the UBS integrated SOPT algorithm is evaluated through benchmark sizing optimization problems of truss structures and the numerical results are reported. A comparison of the numerical results attained using the SOPT algorithm with those of modern metaheuristic techniques demonstrates that the employed algorithm is capable of locating promising designs with considerably less computational effort.

Abstract
This paper attempts to improve the computational efficiency of the well known particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for tackling discrete sizing optimization problems of steel frame structures. It is generally known that, in structural design optimization applications, PSO entails enormously time-consuming structural analyses to locate an optimum solution. Hence, in the present study it is attempted to lessen the computational effort of the algorithm, using the so called upper bound strategy (UBS), which is a recently proposed strategy for reducing the total number of structural analyses involved in the course of design optimization. In the UBS, the key issue is to identify those candidate solutions which have no chance to improve the search during the optimum design process. After identifying those non-improving solutions, they are directly excluded from the structural analysis stage, diminishing the total computational cost. The performance of the UBS integrated PSO algorithm (UPSO) is evaluated in discrete sizing optimization of a real scale steel frame to AISC-LRFD specifications. The numerical results demonstrate that the UPSO outperforms the original PSO algorithm in terms of the computational efficiency.

Abstract
The present paper tackles the optimization problem of double layer grids considering nonlinear behaviour. In this paper, an efficient optimization algorithm is proposed to achieve the optimization task based on the newly developed grey wolf algorithm (GWA) termed as sequential GWA (SGWA). In the framework of SGWA, a sequence of optimization processes is implemented in which the initial population of each process is
selected from the neighboring region of the best design found in the previous optimization process. This procedure is repeated until a termination criterion is met. Two illustrative examples are presented and optimization is performed by GWA and SGWA and two other meta-heuristics. The numerical results indicate that the proposed SGWA utperforms the other algorithms in finding optimal design of nonlinear double layer grids.

Abstract
The paper deals with the reliability–based design optimization (RBDO) of concrete gravity dams subjected to earthquake load using subset simulation. The optimization problem is formulated such that the optimal shape of concrete gravity dam described by a number of variables is found by minimizing the total cost of concrete gravity dam for the given target reliability. In order to achieve this purpose, a framework is presented whereby subset simulation is integrated with a hybrid optimization method to solve the RBDO approach of concrete gravity dam. Subset simulation with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling is utilized to estimate accurately the failure probability of dams with a minimum number of samples. In this study, the concrete gravity dam is treated as a two–dimensional structure involving the material nonlinearity effects and dam–reservoir–foundation interaction. An efficient metamodel in conjunction with subset simulation–MCMC is provided to reduce the computational cost of dynamic analysis of dam–reservoir–foundation system. The results demonstrate that the RBDO approach is more appropriate than the deterministic optimum approach for the optimal shape design of concrete gravity dams.

Abstract
In this paper, the discrete method of eigenvectors of covariance matrix has been used to weight minimization of steel frame structures. Eigenvectors of Covariance Matrix (ECM) algorithm is a robust and iterative method for solving optimization problems and is inspired by the CMA-ES method. Both of these methods use covariance matrix in the optimization process, but the covariance matrix calculation and new population generation in these two methods are completely different. At each stage of the ECM algorithm, successful distributions are identified and the covariance matrix of the successful distributions is formed. Subsequently, by the help of the principal component analysis (PCA), the scattering directions of these distributions will be achieved. The new population is generated by the combination of weighted directions that have a successful distribution and using random normal distribution. In the discrete ECM method, in case of succeeding in a certain number of cycles the step size is increased, otherwise the step size is reduced. In order to determine the efficiency of this method, three benchmark steel frames were optimized due to the resistance and displacement criteria specifications of the AISC-LRFD, and the results were compared to other optimization methods. Considerable outputs of this algorithm show that this method can handle the complex problems of optimizing discrete steel frames.

Abstract
Metaheuristic algorithms are preferred by the many researchers to reach the reliability based design optimization (RBDO) of truss structures. The cross-sectional area of the elements of a truss is considered as design variables for the size optimization under frequency constraints. The design of dome truss structures are optimized based on reliability by a popular metaheuristic optimization technique named Enhanced Vibrating Particle System (EVPS). Finite element analyses of structures and optimization process are coded in MATLAB. Large-scale dome truss of 600-bar, 1180-bar and 1410-bar are investigated in this paper and are compared with the previous studies. Also, a comparison is made between the reliability indexes of Deterministic Design Optimization (DDO) for large dome trusses and Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO).

Abstract
The existence of uncertainties in engineering problems makes it essential to consider these effects at all times. Robust design optimization allows a design to be made less sensitive to uncertain input parameters. Actually, robust design optimization reduces the sensitivity of the objective function and the variations in design performance when uncertainty exists. In this study, two space trusses were optimized based on the modulus of elasticity, yield stress, and cross-sectional uncertainties in order to increase the response robustness and decrease the weight. The displacement of one node has been used as the criterion for Robust Design Optimization (RDO) of these two structures. Two trusses with 72 members and 582 members are considered, which are famous trusses in the field of structural optimization. Also, the EVPS meta-heuristic algorithm was employed which is an enhanced version of the VPS algorithm based on the single degrees of freedom of a system with viscous damping.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop and optimize artificial stone mix designs incorporating microsilica using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and metaheuristic optimization algorithms. Initially, 10 base mix designs were prepared and tested based on previous experience and literature. The test results were used to train an ANN model. The trained ANN was then optimized using SA-EVPS and EVPS algorithms to maximize 28-day compressive strength, with aggregate gradation as the optimization variable. The optimized mixes were produced and tested experimentally, revealing some discrepancies with the ANN predictions. The ANN was retrained using the original and new experimental data, and the optimization process was repeated iteratively until an acceptable agreement was achieved between predicted and measured strengths. This approach demonstrates the potential of combining ANNs and metaheuristic algorithms to efficiently optimize artificial stone mix designs, reducing the need for extensive physical testing.
